KILN MAINTENANCE and FIRING

Workshop Outline:

Students will learn about kiln design, repair and maintenance, how to get the best performance and increase the working life of a kiln. Participants will look at the design of electric and gas fired kilns and how to construct them as well as gaining practical experience working with the two gas fired kilns and the electric kilns at MISSA. In addition to learning about kiln maintenance through hands on experience, students will explore diverse salt high fire techniques.

Instructor

ALAN BURGESS

Alan Burgess, educated at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts in London and Industrial Ceramic Design and Technology at Stoke-on-Trent College, England, has been a potter and teacher all his life. He was Head of the Ceramics department at Bolton College of Art in England and Chair of the Fine Arts department at North Island College, Courtenay, BC. He mainly produces functional work using stoneware and porcelain, the surfaces of which are decorated using a variety of techniques. He also produces larger vessels and bowls, some of them wood-fired, which are the vehicles for drawings and surface enrichment.
