DRIFTWOOD CARVING

Wood Carving | July 09 - 13, 2012 | Loretta Joseph | $445 + $40 course supplies
Workshop Outline:

Using two knives and local drift wood (cottonwood bark), this simple method of creative self-expression is a relaxing and meditative way of giving dead wood new life, and in the process, inspiring personal creativity and artistic confidence. Students will learn to identify various woods at a local beach as well as learning wood preparation, safe techniques for the use of a straight and a ‘bent’ knife, and finishing and sharpening. Most important, the five days will allow time to experience working ‘with’ the wood in the process of its transformation. This workshop is suitable for non-carvers, for carvers who wish to explore the sophistication and versatility of the North West Coast ‘bent’ knife, and for people in other media who want to use wood to enhance their work.

Please note: Everything is supplied for this class: the wood, finishing materials and most especially, two knives for each student. The knives will be for sale if students wish to keep them after using them in the course.
