Instructor: Janna Vallee
Monday to Friday July 11-15
In this five-day workshop, students will work with a large range of natural dyes, including indigo on silk scarves, silk and linen yardage and wool yarn. Participants will learn about and apply the following techniques: mordanting, making natural dye extracts, resisting/shibori, immersion dyeing and printing with raw natural materials (botanical printing), creating an indigo stock solution and preparing, maintaining and troubleshooting an indigo vat. Each day will be spent between preparing and watching over our natural dye pots and indigo vats and resisting our fabric with shibori techniques. Everyone will go away with a collection of yardages and scarves as well as a sample book illustrating the colours and techniques applied throughout the week.
