Both crystalline and low temperature reduction glazes will be covered in this intensive hands-on course. First developed in Europe in the late 1800s, crystalline glazes, with their delicate, lacy, spontaneous patterns have gained a growing interest in recent years. This course will explore various crystalline glazes at cone 10 and cone 6, glaze composition, techniques for runny glazes, firing schedules, form, and aesthetics. This course will also explore cone 01 reduction fired lustre glazes. Fuel economy is one good reason to look at low temperature gas firing, but this process also gives some of the depth and subtlety of high fire reduction with unique colours and lustrous surfaces.

During the last decade, writers have rediscovered the magic in memoirs using a tremendous variety of styles – poetry, fictionalization, or truth-speaking – personal history as art, and sometimes as a healing journey. Writers everywhere are using key life moments in telling their stories. Students will find readings and learning exercises both challenging and humorous, whether writing autobiography for the public record, writing non-fiction for money, fiction, poetry, or an illustrated family heirloom.

These molds will be carved and sanded, then loaded with a textured slab and left to harden. Once leather hard, extruded rims, feet and handles will be added to the slabs. Extruder-die making and design will be explored in depth. This process is fraught with unexpected technical problems such as drying, glazing, and firing and all secrets will be revealed.

Learning to see is a constant and exciting adventure. Students will explore their creativity, learning to recognize the potential pictures all around them. When a photograph communicates some key thought or feeling, and the viewer responds to it, it succeeds. Participants will develop the skills to organize the graphic elements of a compelling image, survey photographic masters, shoot throughout the day, review and critique their own images in a supportive environment, and discover what makes those photographs successful. This course is not concerned with the technical aspects of camera use, but participants must have a working knowledge of their cameras. Students will need a laptop with photo editing software, preferably Photoshop Elements, Photoshop or iPhoto and the knowledge to use it.

Creating interesting, exuberant hand-built forms in clay does not have to be hard. During the 5 days, Carol will show her method for constructing some of the unusual ceramic forms she uses in her sculpture and vessels. The process will include making paper templates, carving solid clay forms, and creating a simple ¼ segment plaster mold. From this press mold students will make numerous forms and variations by connecting, altering, stacking, piercing into and re-combining the component parts. Colour, pattern and texture are important elements in creating a rich ceramic surface and using Carol’s layered approach students will explore many ways to enliven and embellish their forms.

They will also learn about each ingredient and its function in the glaze as well as discovering how varying the ratios of three major glaze components affects stability, color, firing temperature, glaze fit and glaze surface. Colour development as well as glossy, matte and textured surfaces will be explored. Glaze calculation software will be used to compare a variety of glazes. Cone 10 glaze recipes will be altered down to cone 6 and students will fire cone 6 line blends each night in an electric kiln so results can be discussed the next day.

Students will learn to use a crochet hook to Crochet Knit very fine silver wire into a remarkably flexible and delicate tube and then learn to make two linked chain patterns: Jens Pind Chain and Turkish Round Maille. The lovely narrow rope of the Jens Pind chain (perfect for showing off pendants) contrasts beautifully with the richly textured Turkish Round Maille chain. Both linked chains are constructed from sterling silver jump-rings. Simple fastening mechanisms and findings, including ear wires, are taught so that each student may finish two bracelets and one pair of earrings. Materials kit includes 1.5oz. of silver wire and rings.

In this workshop, students will use simple forms to explore this process of sculpting with clay. Starting with soft responsive clay, the form is built, cut apart, hollowed out, and then put back together. Students will then focus on integrating the surface to the form through painting on the raw clay with coloured slips, sgraffito, carving, sprigging, and any other style of surface work they wish. Finally, using a colemanite wash, the piece is ready for a single-firing at a later date.

Karel Roessingh explains how to write music on a level understandable to anyone with a basic knowledge of notes and chords. Mornings will be spent with structure and process, and afternoons we’ll write and play music together so that students will have an opportunity to come away with their own creation. Some time will be spent discussing business and registration of new musical works.

An abstract painting with some sense of a horizon line immediately gives reference to a landscape without actually being a landscape. In this two day workshop, students will develop their painting skills using acrylics with oil pastels as a resist. They will learn to create forms that become their own personal language of symbols. The layers of colour, form and line along with opaque and transparent paint will, in effect, become the personal landscape of each student.

Students will explore the endless possibilities in using felting needles as a means to sculpt wool into three-dimensional forms and will learn to use a drum carder to create fibre blends and batts of wool for their projects. An introductory session on Nuno (wet) felting will create a light-weight, textile base to use in conjunction with needle felting. Projects will include a variety of fine art fashion accessories: wearable head pieces, collars, cuffs, bracelets and other jewelry items. Students will sample techniques that will inspire their imagination to create a whole new realm of accessories.

This workshop is a chance to perform and be adjudicated by a professional and peers. Students will learn what they do well, take pointers on possible improvements, and discuss all aspects of a performance opportunity. Some experience is helpful, but certainly not a pre-requisite. Please bear in mind that this workshop is not meant to advance artistic abilities, but rather how those abilities are presented.

The workshop will expand the participants’ understanding of interpretive image making and personal visual language. Through discussions, assignments, critique sessions and editing, students will explore the path to their own unique vision and authorship. Most important, the five days will allow time to experience working ‘with’ the wood in the process of its transformation. This workshop is suitable for non-carvers, for carvers who wish to explore the sophistication and versatility of the North West Coast ‘bent’ knife, and for people in other media who want to use wood to enhance their work.

Please note: Everything is supplied for this class: the wood, finishing materials and most especially, two knives for each student. The knives will be for sale if students wish to keep them after using them in the course.

In this lively workshop, participants engage in a playful exploration of abstraction using cold wax medium and oils to create vibrant paintings. A fresh approach to working more freely and intuitively will be presented along with clear, concise explanations of colour theory, harmony, value and design as students work on a flowing series of small paintings or multiples. The workshop will also have a brief introduction to cold wax monotypes. Because this workshop focuses on the painting process, and is experimental in nature, the class appeals to those who are open, flexible and willing to play.
